It's true - I am 14.

I don't want to have to setup smart mailboxes / automatic things that move the mails to a specific folder, I believe a mailing list traffic should be kept to a minimum, for example just meeting announcements, otherwise in my eyes it should just be classed as junk mail, especially with mails being a paragraph or two.

Web forums can be modified/setup to automatically mail you if every single post/thread, and you can tell them to leave you alone too for when/when you want to browse them.

The advantage of mailing lists is that you get your own message back (useless)! - another reason a forum would be better because it doesn't e-mail you your own mail...

Do you mean "why do we have a mailing list, not a web forum"? Generally because web forums are annoyingly constrictive, force one choice of interface on users, and are not as flexible or accessible as mailing lists. If you find this particular topic not of interest to you, I suggest you use the "ignore thread" functionality provided by most mail programs :)

It's of slightly ironic that people like Ste are exactly the people we are trying to welcome onto the list as a result of this thread. While I share the general consensus about web forums vs mailing lists, I think that perhaps explaining gently to those who may not immediately have grasped the advantages of mailing lists.
