I have a DV camera and a system with the necessary firewire ports.

The available Free Software for this was rather limited in its application
when I last looked (over a year ago) however I think mplayer's encoder
should do the job nicely enough once the video is put onto disk.

The biggest challenge with DV is size - just a couple of minutes of video
can use a GB of storage!

I can probably produce VCD output. I am thinking of buying a DVD-+RW drive
which would facilitate DVD quality output but I don't currently have the
necessary cash so that wont happen in time.
