It is in some ways similar to the MK-II protocol, except a simple checksum is 
used instead of a CRC-16. Perhaps Atmel is moving to have a more standard 
serial interface to it's devices?

As well the new protocol adds basically packet numbers to each data packet 
sent, so perhaps it is a change for future USB devices, but I'm not sure.
