Comment #11 on issue 2566 by address@hidden: Beaming in 3/4 with leading rest
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2566

We should keep this issue to the specific case of beaming in 3/4 with a leading eighth rest. The 4. 888 pattern is the subject of 2246. We should also keep in mind the whole range of music genres.

So summarising the evidence, David shows one example of r8 [88888] in comment 6, and Keith finds at least 10 examples of 5 eighths beamed together against just one with the leading eighth disconnected. But so far all the evidence has come from the romantic or classical period. Are there any examples from other genres to guide us?

As a general principle I would prefer LilyPond to follow simple typesetting rules by default, perhaps those suggested by Gould, with user-selectable options for other patterns which apply or are common in particular genres. Rather like Carl's approach to 2246 with his beamWholeMeasure/beamHalfMeasure context properties.
