I'm convinced by the arguments above that the default beaming should be
r8 [a a a a a], leaving manual beaming as the alternative (just for the  
record, as I opposed it earlier).  I'm also happy with Keith's proposed  
patch, which leaves half-measure beaming under user control, with the  
default following the classical/romantic practice.  Nice patch, Keith -  
simplifies the code and fixes two bugs, especially as one is a regression  
in the 7th release candidate :)
