We shouldn't label this "needs evidence" because comments 4-7 show plenty of evidence to support the original bug report. These examples were for piano but single-part music is written the same way (image from Brahms' piano trio Op.60).

So there is regression since 2.14.2 in matching common practice. In cases of doubt we probably want LilyPond to err on the side of clarity, letting the user choose whether to override with manual beams. Here, however, there has been no evidence that {r8 a[ a a a a]} is a case of doubt.
