I don't mind anyone trying anything, but there's limited use in problem
reports, esp for versions long past their use-by.

I can't comment on "standard", but I successfully lobbied SuSE into
dumping all cdrecord+dvdpatches from the distribution (or relegating
them to some corner). Problems have reduced no end. I never looked at
cdrecord2+dvdpatches myself because I view(ed) it as a waste of time.

Open source has a tendency to do have 5 programs for the same thing,
most/all of which mediocre. As you clearly say,

cdrecord hacks are limited in functionality and inferior to growisofs,
which works with pretty much any burner and any format. As I see it,
that means cdrecord hacks must justify their existance. I haven't found
any justification myself, and the hacks' authors remain silent. They
also remain silent on any kind of support or bug fix. Not one of them
even has a website with further info. Enough reasons for me to state
that cdrecordhacks should go to /dev/null, and not down everyone's
throat in the form of $DISTRO's default burning software.

If cdrecordhack authors have personal reasons for keeping on working on
it I don't mind at all. If they wanted to do the world a service though
they'd put their expertise into growisofs.

Until there are things cdrecordhacks can do which growisofs can't, the
hacks are totally superfluous. So far I've heard command line
compatibility. I say make a wrapper script, but the fact noone has yet
might mean the need isn't so high afterall. If it works by all means use
it, if it doesn't, oh well, best forget about it.

This is my reasoning, I'm open to convincing arguments though.
