If dvdrecord doesn't work for you, report a bug to its author if you can
be bothered, otherwise use a program like growisofs. Dvdrecord is
nothing but trouble, generally speaking.

In this case it looks like you may have to erase the disk first, or you
tried to burn a non-burnable disk or one which is finalised.

Oh yeah, don't waste your time on this sort of thing. We're in the third
millennium now. Didn't you get some better software with your new 2.6
Linux system?
