Adding a user option disabling the toolkit-desktop icons and switching to the fallback shouldn't be too hard.
But I think it's worth our effort to try to integrate first. It's what users generally expect from applications, and the effect is that the program fits the desktop environment better. I hear this sentiment is particularly strong among macOS users.
