Ah, I see.
Look, I have just one single machine which is capable of running
FlightGear. Formerly I was able to run two 'proper' instances on this
machine, thus doing tests with CERTI/VirtualAir (RTIG on the Sun).

Nowadays I still can fire up two instances of FG, they both show the
so-called "splash screen", among other preparatory stuff they both
nicely initiate a connection with the RTIG, but neither of both is
switching into the scene graph rendering mode. Probably some scene
graph and/or OpenGL driver issue ....

.... obviously related to the use of shaders in the FlightGear scene
graph, as I just found out, since disabling their use makes two
instances of FG work as before.

There still seems to be an 'issue' ("feature") with new FG instances
being unable to connect to the same RTIG after former ones aborted
unexpectedly.
Nevertheless, leaving FG instances cleanly allows new ones to connect
and communicate nicely.

Cheers,
        Martin.
