That's your only chance.

Ideally, with shell access to the CVS machine, one could
repository-copy the old file in the CVS repo, rename all old tags in
it, and then commit a new version of it under a new name.  That way,
if you do a ``cvs log'' on the new file, you can still browse the
history back to Jesus' birth. ;-)  (That's the way it is handled in
FreeBSD.)
