IIRC, I changed this at some point since other tests also swicthed from
conftest to conf$$. Checking lib/autoconf now I see no trace of such
changes, so it seems I was wrong. I'll drop the name change, but the
other change still stands. In fact, this entire macro should probably
check whether $LN_S is 'ln -s' before proceeding; it makes no sense to
do this test on systems without softlinks.
