Of course! But in this case it is this, or a closed protocol by a company that has an economic interest to change ot to defeat reverse-engineers, and who did this in the past.
You cannot say the 2 approaches are the same. Both are not ideal, but one is *much* better than the other.
(or one is much worse, as you want :-)
