I have to agree.

But one addition I found incidentally (no announcement here):
http://mitglied.lycos.de/esel2ksearch/mld/suxxx-16.40lugdunumconnectfixv2.patch

This fixed at least the connect-situation to the actual >= 16.40 servers.
I don't know about the extended UDP protocol.
