You probably don't appreciate the correction, but I feel it necessary
to point out that you've misunderstood the meaning of "cargo cult
programming". It doesn't mean "copy features". It means to copy
programming language constructs unnecessarily and without
understanding what they mean, such as for example always putting
"#include <stdio.h>" in a C header whether or not the file needs C I/O
just because you've seen other C files do this and you have never
taken the time to question what it is nor do you understand its
effects.

Whether Gnome 3's design copy features or not from mobile devices or
not isn't cargo cult programming. It's not that they don't understand
what effect their features would ellicit and copied them as magical
incantations, but perhaps they misjudged how effective these features
would be.
