Well, I would not wish upon octave the fates of openoffice (split
because of disagreements with an 800 pound company), emacs (unable to
release regularly, though probably "perfect enough") or imagemagick
(unable to guarantee a stable API).
However, what I meant (despite my poor example) was that a newcomer
cannot take hold in an environment already occupied. A U-235-like
fission is possible, but needs a large dissenting minority in the
community.
Sorry for generating an OT (though the initial post showed as much potential).
