my autoconf versions are 2.57 on RH-9.0 and 2.59 on Centos 4.3.  sorry, a typo, the header files are in ufsparse and not uMfsparse as i had written earlier.
address@hidden ufsparse]$ ls /usr/local/include/ufsparse/
ccolamd.h  colamd.h  cs.h  UFconfig.h
with these manual copying the CCOLAMD,COAMD and CXSparse were recognised.

No AC_CHECK_HEADERS should look in <include_dir>/ufsparse/ then in
<include_dir>/umfpack and then in <include_dir>. In any of these
locations it should be found. If its not its probably a bug in your
autoconf. What version of autoconf are you using..
