I'm also hoping that octave for Mac will become more
user friendly, in particular for installation. 

However, I must say that a graph that I showed at
conference in June 2003 and that took months to
prepare (including all the calculations needed for 110
species), now takes about 20-30 seconds. [plots and
calculations for as many species that I have data for
to calculate the corresponding Leslie matrix and then
the first derivatives of lambda w.r.t. vital rates.
The Leslie matrix has the survival rates on the first
sub-diagonal, and the fertilities on the first row].
