In the beginning, the idea was to have a free and portable
implementation of Forth-94 (ANS Forth) that should be the
Forth-94-compatible successor of fig-Forth and F83 (a popular system
that implemented the Forth-83 standard).  The goals are outlined in

and you can read more about the ideas behind it and the original
