I think your automake is too new. I once (maybe half a year ago) made a
few changes to support the new automake, but it broke compilation on my
(then) second development system, an older Redhat system with automake
1.4, so I reverted the patch.
Did you try changing AC_CONFIG_HEADER to AM_CONFIG_HEADER in configure.ac?
