I don't know the correct "technical" answer to this.  I just assumed 
this was an "accidental" benefit of the way dd works.  I assume(?) "dd"
would work this way with any device that the kernal knew 
was "writable" - or maybe read/writable?

On Redhat 7.2/7.3 - the DVDRAM drive is recognised as a read/write 
drive and can be treated as a removable disk - format it and use the 
cp command, etc.  I was not being able to find any version of cdrecord 
or dvdrecord, etc that would properly work with the Mashita DVD-RAM 
LF-D310 that forced me down this path.

There seem to be so many "kludges", "try this at your own risk source code
patches" and "problems" with DVD-XXX type devices - I am not sure if the 
official specs mean anything?  It is what works that counts?  Just a novice
DVD-RAM user's opinion (do not weight it highly).
