That's an argument in favour of _ed_ , which allows stdin and stdout, AFAIK:


printf "a\nThese\nthree\nlines\n.\nw dummy_file\nq" | ed


should create the file _dummy_file_ with those three lines. :)

Would _ed_ be an acceptable compromise in _basic.mk_ instead of _nano_ ? :)
