Hi Dan,

I have never been one to choose proprietary solutions over opensource ones; however, I have recently begun exploring ways to integrate flash into my otherwise almost exclusively php/mysql/apache/unix world. I have been strongly influenced by Jacobson and Jacobson's _Flash and XML: A Developer's Guide_, which explains and illustrates ways to use Flash not just for the whizz bang skip-intro stuff but to provide attractive and functional interfaces to database-backed pages. My colleagues and I develop instructional materials for medical education. We need to illustrate things, processes, just noticeable differences, etc. I don't think javascript would allow us to develop the kind of interactivity we need, but I could be wrong. I may have given up on javascript too soon when I got tired of inconsistencies in its behavior across platforms and browsers. Maybe Flash will prove to have the same inconsistencies, but that has not been my experience so far. As for restricting browsers, again, I have not had that experience. I am not aware of a browser/platform that will not work with Flash. Until last month, web access from our computer classrooms was via netscape 4.x running on xterminals. There was a Flash plugin for solaris. When we installed it, no one ever reported trouble with Flash apps, but we had many problems with javascript. I am happy to discuss this further if you want outside this arena.

In the meantime, if you can answer my query about where to put the onload() function in my script, that'd be great.

All best,

Kathie

Thanks, TW-2. I have just been working on a timer for a phptest project myself. I was looking into using flash/actionscript ...

Why would anyone use flash for this? Wouldn't that
needlessly restrict the web browsers that could use it?
This is just one more example of how Flash is perverting
the web.

Javascript may not be universal, but at least it's an
open standard, and there are free software implementations.
