while this really is a permission problem that can be circumvented by running everything as root, I would not recommend that.

I run everything as normal user, including speech...

Did you copy the paparazzi udev rules? And are you a member of the plugdev group?

There is a page in the wiki about setting up udev rules, unfortunately it seem to be down again right now...

The strange thing is that is not needed for lpc devices...
Also some utilities like speech will not run if you are not running the paparazzi center as root (sudo)
