Yes it is supposed to be in a perfect world according to the specs but
artists, software and pipeline have different ideas about that.
Artists are always forgetting to change their render gamma to 1.0
because many 3d apps don't support luts in the render viewer so you
need to manually change it from 2.2 to 1.0 every time you send it to
the farm.  On top of that try to explain "linear workflows" to man of
the 3d artists out there and you will get confused looks.

I know many companies even convert their cineon/dpx log files to exr
because of the space saving they get.
