In theory that would be possible.  But I think that the mockup you showed
does not look nice.  Also, there is no space there for "Modified".  Where
would that go?  And where would the prompt bar go (^W, ^R, ^T, ^O)?
The text on this bar can get pretty long when you switch on regexes and
backups and case sensitivity, or when you append to a file in DOS format,
or similar things.

There are other requests: to simply suppress the title bar entirely and
leave just the status bar [1], or to put extra state information in the
title bar [2], or to reduce the info that --constantshow shows [3].  In
that last issue there is also the suggestion to combine all three of
those into a full-width status bar that contains just the filename and
some basic state information (and which gets replace with the prompt bar
or error messages when necessary).

Anyone else who would like a more compact interface?  And if yes, how
would you want it to look?
