Reading through this, I'd just like to say I think we're confusing two things. Iirc someone said "Courier is a crap font" and the discussion rapidly veered off into fixed width.

While I have no real comment to make about Courier, and I think there are much better fonts out there, I do think we should keep fixed-width for code. Just look for a better font :-)
