Here are two examples from evince-previewer. Please note that in the first screen shot, thickness of stems is quite on the outrageous side, but there are still isolated stems that are thin.

It is also apparent, however, that on the second screen shot, the beams of the next to last group stick out. Shapes combine better with stroke adjustment off since then every _edge_ is as accurate as possible independent from the opposite edge. The best combination can only be achieved by stopping to typeset the shapes independently: the stroke adjustment clipping applied to the stem needs to affect the beam ends as well. One fix would be to let the beams only reach to the _middle_ of the stem, but it would likely be hard to design an outline for the beam/stem corner at high resolution that makes good sense, in particular when beams are highly slanted.
