Ok, another musing.  From the PLRM:

    The initial value of the stroke adjustment parameter is
    device-dependent; typically it is true for displays and false for
    printers. It is set to false when a font's BuildChar, BuildGlyph,
    or CharStrings procedure is called, but the procedure can change
    it. It is not altered by initgraphics.

That would suggest to me that for use with a rasterdevice, we should
not usually touch or override the device-dependent default.

However, I can't right now find similar information for PDF rendering.
Is a PDF renderer supposed to know whether to use stroke adjustment or
not when not specified by the user by setting the SA parameter?
