Weren't those changes you suggested above to be made to the grub.cfg?

I've made those changes to the grub.cfg and it still doesn't work :-(

I can't understand how this could be so complicated. It really looks 
like there is something overriding all of these variables. Is it 
possible it requires the hex number like 0x114?

I even set GFXMODE to "text" in /etc/default/grub then regenerated the 
grub.cfg and that made no difference:

GRUB_GFXMODE=text
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text

I'd sure appreciate anyone's help. I'd really like to figure this out. I 
don't know how other people tolerate 1900x1280 on a server with a video 
card that has very little video memory.
