I only reason I included that is because though I don't really know
exactly what elisp might require, I was extrapolating from what I
know about scheme.
well if you take it on faith that scheme is the most general language,
then optimization as a class of integration issue moves back out below
the horizon. this view also suggests an implementation change style
that would be additive only, not necessarily replacing or interfering w/
whatever works pre-change.
this might be obvious to everyone, i'm just thinking aloud...
