Just to chime in on the discussion. i used to play oxyd/oxyd magnum and was first put off by the free choice of levels I was given in enigma. I also have to mention that I was a pretty hardcore "gamer" back then, spending a whole weekend just in order to solve oxyd magnum. Now beeing just a casual gamer I quickly realized it was fun and rather relaxing to jump to my favorites and leave others unsolved for the time beeing. To decide when you just want a quick little fix or when you want to grind your teeth made enigma a whole other (better) experience. I would vote for leaving the levels unlocked for now and later add a "tournament mode" for those who want to go through the levels (esp. the oxyd ones) in a specified order. So one has the chance to build a well rounded ladder game with tournament mode with a few selected levels and the casual gamer can still toy around in "relaxed mode".
I agree with Ingo when he says
Challenge and frustration are pretty closely related.
and I too think the levels in themselves are challenging enough to make enigma an entertaining game.

Thanks for listening

        Georg
