The tar.gz file for the Gnome 2 icons has an AUTHORS file with names and email addresses: https://launchpad.net/gnome-icon-theme/main/2.20.0/+download/gnome-icon-theme-2.20.0.tar.gz Richard, don't you want to ask them to add a "GPL2 and later" (you probably know the exact wording needed) line to the README file of this branch? You asking them may have more weight.
