Perhaps we do need to leave our own version of urlparse in there.  This is the kind of thing that makes support difficult.

Here's a thought on the hostname error you're seeing.  You sound like you're not running Ubuntu.  So here's my python2.6.9's urlparse.py:  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/7412971/

What does yours look like?

Mine came from the deadsnakes PPA which forward ports old Pythons to new Ubuntu releases.  So maybe that packager did something odd with urlparse.  Or maybe we're on different micro-releases of Python and there are notable differences.

here you go. for starters i checked the crushftp site. same as my manual tests. host missing.
python was Python 2.6 (r26:66714, Mar 30 2010, 00:30:21) ..ede

It's very frustrating that I don't see those host missing errors.  Fresh checkout, with neither py26 nor py27.  I'm in Ubuntu 14.04.  Not sure what else could be different for us.

But anyway, here's the pastebin for my odd get/404 error (right after creating file) on box.com: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/7412867/

For comparison, here's a run that worked on crushftp's demo site: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/7412877/
