Ah, you have the desktop perspective :) For me, the obvious
"notification areas" would be /var/log and mail sent from the Cron
daemon, and "control" tools would be "kill" and "vi" :)

I guess that could be interesting, though I see some problems: how could
an applet monitor a process that only runs sporadically? I suppose on
such an applet I would want to see the last time a backup was made. When
dupicity is NOT running, you would get nothing from dbus. Parsing a log
file would give you more persistent information, no?

You also mentioned a single applet; what would the second process be?
