Yes, I knew it worked under FreeBSD/alpha, for whatever reason.  See
the thread starting at

http://www.avr1.org/mailman/private/avr-gcc-list/2004-April/006601.html

for some details.  Since the same error occurred on both, Linux/x86_64
and FreeBSD/sparc64, it doesn't look like a big-endian only 64-bit
issue though.

Anyway, since FreeBSD 3.4.0 fixed it, I'm perfectly happy with that
solution.
