Really? It doesn't require Python and rdiff-backup on the target side?
Because that's what is NOT installed on our backup server (on which I don't
have root).

I could theoretically install a statically compiled python2.2 binary and
rdiff-backup on the backup server but I think that's too much of a hassle
and would only provoke more problems.

Yup, the backup server is on the same LAN as the backup client is. That is
not a problem. But shfs is buggy anyway, it seems (see other post).
