You can use www.jigle.com or www.filedonkey.com to search for files
outside mldonkey, and just paste the ed2k:// link to mldonkey to
download the files you want.

No, it is not. mldonkey is able to download from sources without being
connected to servers (if it knows some valid sources).

Strange, are you sure there are servers in the list. Can you try to go
to the GUI console and ask 'vm' and 'vma' to see if the problem is
with the gui or if the core is simply not connected ?

Often, mldonkey does not connect to servers immediatly (because it is
busy computing md4s or because the link is too busy and the
connections fail). It is normally not a problem, since the connections
should work after a short while. Another possible reason is that you
have a limited number of connections possible (some users like to set
the option max_opened_connections for that), and at startup, they are
all already used to connect to sources.
