Follow-up Comment #4:

I wouldn't accept the change as proposed - we can't decrease the default
value without breaking lwIP's RFC compliance, which is not something I want
to see happen.

setsockopt() is the proper way to support making it smaller, and I thought we
already did.  We already support some socket options anyway, so adding this
one would not involve a lot of extra code. 

However, the current situation is not too bad: it can be changed quite easily
from the source, and not everything needs to be a runtime configurable option!
