Out of curiosity, are there any problems with validating using
xmllint --schema or is it just that the W3C validator is better? I
now know that libxml2's Schematron support leaves a lot to be
desired, but it's XML Schema validation served me well so far...

I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the alerts, but nothing
concrete yet.
