Which opensuse version do you use? If you have 11.3 you will have automake 
1.11 (I also had it with 11.2 since I always compile the development version 
as well as the snapshots).
If you switch to debian (I have it also on one machine) you will need debian 
squeeze=testing since lenny comes with automake 1.10.
