You forgot two other optons
4) False detection (report the bug to the maker of the spyware scanner)
5) Spyware installed after the installation of Octave.
Given the number of downloads of the binary and that the latest virus report
against it was a false detection, I suspect strongly that this is one of the
above. You say its a computer lab? How about a tcpdump from the router
proving that there are packets going somewhere they shouldn't be?
