Not only that, include the equivalent .oct files as well. I just replaced
trisolve.m with trisolve.oct (had to recompile it with mkoctfile to get rid
of the version 2.1.46 warning) and execution time on my test case went from
over an hour, back to less than three minutes.

If octave and octave-forge are to be kept separate, at least make the
octave-forge installer check the current octave version and reinstall if
necessary.

Also, Henry, I can tell you off-list what I did to successfully install
octave-forge from fink with octave 2.1.46 under OS X 10.2.8, if you're
interested. You have to compile it from source, because it is not available
as a binary under dselect.
