An alternative that you may find useful is Stephen Boyd's sp function,
implemented in Octave as a .oct file wrapper for his original c code
function. Source for the octave port is at
ftp://ftp.eng.auburn.edu/pub/hodel/semidef-oct.tar.gz
It's more horsepower than you were looking for, but I've found it to be
useful.
