This behaviour disappeared when I defined kerkis roman and italics as 
special font. I put in this

.special KR KI S

If this shouldn't be necessary, I'll try to isolate this problem.

He he. The document is a catalogue of medieval manuscript. There is one 
section describing a manuscript from Constantinople AD 1360. The names are 
names of orthodox saints that should have appeared in the index of names.

The is most likely reason is that the font family escape was last when 
writing the diversted text. I've not decided how to handle the indexing of 
this large and complex document.
