This is my setup

        cd /usr/share/groff/current/font/devps
grep Kerkis KR KB KI KBI | grep -v pfa | grep -v \#
        KR:internalname Kerkis
        KB:internalname Kerkis-SemiBold
        KI:internalname Kerkis-Italic
        KBI:internalname Kerkis-SemiBold-Italic

This I haven't done. My DESC file says (the standard)

        styles R I B BI
        family T
        fonts 9 0 0 0 0 0 SS S ZD ZDR

Appart from Times (T) there no other ordinary fonts (I mean
there seem to be no need to register Bookman, Palatino et al,
I haven't registered Berling). The special stuff SS S ZD ZDR is registered
though. When I think of it, this is the most likely cause of my problem
since SS is mentioned first here groff will look there first before it
looks in KR. Is that so?

They are.
