Is using the old Garmin the best approach though ? I still have one in 
service but will move away from it soon, the performance is nothing 
special and I recently noticed it suffering from another rollover bug 
(date is incorrect now) and no way to get a firmware patch for it.

As others suggest though, it can certainly work with pretty much any SBC 
with a little interface hardware if that is really what you want.
