While this is possible (I don't remember what the last incarnation of the
Java code looked like), I have my doubts about whether or not this was the
case. The last version I saw was hammered out in order to get the original
crypto project done; I vaguely recall Christian cleaning it up after that.
Christian's not here to defend himself, but since he codes and does design
work on an open source Java virtual machine for his PhD research, IMHO he
has a much more intimate awareness of exactly what the code is doing and
what performance issues are than your average "java developer".
Actually, the Java stuff was abandoned because the GNU guys were against
it (proprietary software issues). To the best of my knowledge, the only
parts written in Java were the GUI and the request manager. The rest was
all done in C from the start. If performance issues were involved, I doubt
they were the main concern.
