The visitor numbers to the expo were way, way down.

Really? Is that official? I wonder why? Too much sunshine outside?

The .org stand, being on the ground floor, could easily be missed by those not already aware of it.

Only by the bind and the intentionally ignorant: the access to it was the central feature in front of redhat as you entered the exhibition. To get to redhat or most other places you had to go around it. As you passed it it was clear to see debian, and org village. I have not been reading my FSFE mail recently so I was not aware of this idea, but I did read about org village in the promotional literature (can't remember which) and even had I not done so I think the meaning of this is intuitive to natural constituents.

I feel the majority of visitors to the .org stands were friends of free software and/or know people on the projects.

True it was nice to meet some of the guys from this list, and sad to miss those who came tuesday, but I did not know any of the other exhibitors and regret not having enough time to speak to them all. For those I did meet it was great to discover fink for example providing alternative desktops and native access.

If you are behind a counter, the visitor feels they have their own space and can come and go easily. Having a counter between you can be less intimidating for both parties.

Personally I have to be quite motivated to shout across a barrier at those shows. I reckon Des Morris would have a field day watching - it's all such artificial networking, but can be fun if you enjoy winding people up. Counterless definitely works better for me, but YMMV.
