We've started a project called phpOrganisation (it's on sourceforge)
which will provide accounting facilities to the small business - ie us!
It's in active development, but only by me. The plan is to provide an
open source alternative to the functionality of Sage, but built on a
sounder basis (php/SQL backend). It naturally knows all about VAT, which
is the main problem with Gnucash and other US-centric accounts apps.

phpOrganisation also purports to be contacts manager, customer relations
manager and project and contract costings manager. If you're interested,
then take a look at the code. It will rapidly expand from where it is
now on sourceforge cvs, as I'm porting it to php templates and putting
the results into cvs, meaning there's actually much more to it that
would appear if you got the code from the cvs right now as I write this
email.

I'll make an announcement here when I have all the templating done and
the project has become more complete.

If anyone would be interested in expediting the development of this
project, then do call us to find out more.
